This week, one lucky online gambler in New Jersey hit a $6.45 million progressive slot jackpot at online casino BetMGM. That’s the biggest prize at a regulated U.S. online casino in the 10 years since markets began to open.
The lucky player hit The Big One networked progressive jackpot on Monday August 19 while playing the Fruit Blaster slot game. The Big One is a networked jackpot across in-house produced games by BetMGM co-owner Entain.
As well as the massive $6,450,023 prize, the winner is also in line for a free trip to any MGM Resorts International property in Las Vegas or the wider U.S.
The previous biggest U.S. online casino jackpot was also won by a BetMGM player from New Jersey, who hit a $3 million prize at MGM’s Borgata Online casino skin in November 2023.
“BetMGM and one lucky player made iGaming history. It’s been a summer filled with anticipation, watching the progressive jackpot grow quickly to record levels,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt in a press release.
“This win is the latest proof that BetMGM Casino is the premier destination for progressive jackpots and unforgettable experiences.”
The Big Win
The Big One progressive jackpot reached a record level in February of this year. It continued to grow right up until the big win on Monday.
The lucky player was wagering $200 spins on the five-reel Fruit Blaster slot when they hit big. The game, developed by Entain, is one of 19 BetMGM slot titles linked to The Big One Jackpot. The winner chose to remain anonymous.
“IT HAS HAPPENED,” BetMGM posted on social media.
“Our MASSIVE, record-breaking New Jersey jackpot has hit! A VERY lucky NJ player is now the proud winner of the LARGEST jackpot in online casino history.”
However, the above statement is not strictly true. It is only the biggest win in U.S. online casino history. Globally, others have won more. A lot more.
Bigger Wins
Although $6.45 million is undoubtedly a massively life-changing prize for the vast majority of people, it’s far from the biggest gambling win in the global online casino business.
The online slot game Mega Moolah by Microgaming has made several $20 million-plus winners over the last few decades.
The biggest was for a Belgian player at Napoleon Sports & Casino, who in 2021 won $23.5 million. There was also the 2015 case of a British former soldier who hit a $17.2 million win on a Mega Moolah slot after betting just 25p.
However, those wins are all chump change compared with the biggest value lottery jackpots, such as the $1.7 billion won by Edwin Castro on the California Lottery in 2023, or the mid-2024 Powerball jackpot of $1.4 billion won by Oregon resident and cancer patient Cheng “Charlie” Saephan.
