One player recently walked away from the poker tables at MGM National Harbor (pictured) $1.2 million richer from just one hand.
The lucky player was visiting the MGM Resorts International property in Maryland from neighboring Virginia. That’s when they hit the progressive jackpot prize at an Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em table.
The player hit a diamonds royal flush to bag the $1.3 million pot offered on the rare combo. The odds of getting dealt such a hand in 7-card Texas Hold ‘Em are 30,939 to one.
9.5% of the big win will be held by the casino for Maryland tax purposes, and the winner will be responsible for sorting out their own resulting income taxes.
The casino called it a “monumental win” in a post on social media. However, the lucky jackpot winner declined to reveal anything about their identity, other than that they are from Virginia.
“What an incredible moment for our guest to win this huge jackpot at MGM National Harbor. As an entertainment destination, our mission is to provide a variety of options for guests to have an unforgettable experience — whether at a restaurant, a show, or in the casino,” said Alex Alvarado, VP of casino operations.
“We’re thrilled that a local struck a big payday on one of our many table games that feature progressive jackpots.”
Maryland’s Big Winners
While certainly a big payday, this latest jackpot is far from the biggest MGM National Harbor has paid out in recent years.
In 2022, a player identified as John C. won the casino’s top poker jackpot prize. That was for hitting the astonishingly rare combo of a seven-card straight flush.
John’s four to 10 of Hearts hand netted him a cool $3.04 million before taxes. The odds of such a hand occurring are 72,192 to 1, according to Wikipedia.
MGM National Harbor is a $1.4 billion casino resort situated just outside of Washington, D.C. It has a 135,000-square-foot casino floor, and the resort has a 24-story casino hotel with 308 guest rooms and a 3,000-seat concert space.
While $3.03 million and $1.2 million are no chump change jackpot wins by any standard, they are far from the biggest gambling wins recorded in the state of Maryland. Three Powerball lottery jackpot winners have hit for $100 million-plus in the past decade.
The biggest was a $731.1 million prize given out in 2021. It was won by a consortium of state residents from Lonaconing calling themselves “The Power Pack.”
