We don’t yet know who the regular season MVP is. The NFL won’t announce that until the Thursday before the Super Bowl. We do know that it is likely to be one of two players – Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, paying -450, or Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, currently paying +320.
As we wait the next four weeks to see which of those two quarterbacks is named the MVP, we have plenty of time to look ahead to the real prize of professional football, the Super Bowl MVP.
Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs (+400)
You don’t officially have to win the Super Bowl to be its MVP. But with 57 of the 58 previous MVPs coming from the winning team, it sure helps. If Patrick Mahomes wins his fourth MVP at Super Bowl LIX, it will almost certainly mean the Kansas City Chiefs have become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.
A fourth MVP for Mahomes would be the second most all-time, and just one behind Tom Brady’s record of five.
Jared Goff – Detroit Lions (+600)
The Detroit Lions are the current betting favorites to win the Super Bowl (+280), and that means that quarterback Jared Goff is high on the odds board. He played in the Super Bowl as a member of the Los Angeles Rams (and lost). But this season, he’s played the best football of his career.
If Detroit makes it to New Orleans in February, Goff is an obvious favorite.
Josh Allen – Buffalo Bills (+700)
Josh Allen is the favorite to win the regular season MVP, the Bills are the fourth betting favorite to win the Super Bowl, and he is the third betting favorite to win the game’s MVP. And if all of these things happen, he stands to cash a very big bonus check.
Allen gets $1.5 million if he is the league MVP, $1 million for an AFC Championship win, and $2.5 million for winning the Super Bowl. He also has escalators on next year’s salary, which includes $2.5 million for an AFC Championship win and another $5 million if Buffalo wins the Super Bowl.
Lamar Jackson – Baltimore Ravens (+800)
A number of players have won the MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season. Patrick Mahomes is the most recent to do it, joining Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre, and Kurt Warner. Lamar Jackson, already the owner of two MVP awards, would like to add his name to that list.
The Ravens are the third betting favorite to win the Super Bowl, paying +600.
Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles (+1500)
The one time we’ve seen Jalen Hurts in the Super Bowl, he was spectacular. And if the Philadelphia Eagles had won Super Bowl LVII, no doubt his 304 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns would have won him the MVP award.
The Eagles are desperate to get back to the big game and win it this time (+700), where Hurts is sure to put on another show.
Jahmyr Gibbs – Detroit Lions (+1700)
If the Lions win the Super Bowl and the MVP isn’t Goff, it’s likely to be running back Jahmyr Gibbs. He’s only in his second season in the NFL, and already has proven to be a big game star. He scored four touchdowns in Sunday’s division-clinching win over the Minnesota Vikings, and last year, during the playoffs as a rookie, he scored a touchdown in all three games.
Saquon Barkley – Philadelphia Eagles (+2200)
Saquon Barkley skipped a chance to set the single-season rushing record so he and the rest of the Eagles could be ready to make a postseason run. If they do, and go on to win the Super Bowl, Barkley is the next logical Eagle to star in the game behind Jalen Hurts.
Sam Darnold – Minnesota Vikings (+2200)
Given up on as the starting quarterback by the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, what a story it would be if Sam Darnold leads the Minnesota Vikings to their first Super Bowl win. Darnold was at the Super Bowl last year as a backup for the San Francisco 49ers, but he’s never taken a postseason snap.
Jordan Love – Green Bay Packers (+3000)
The season began in Brazil with Jordan Love suffering a scary injury to his knee. It could end with him holding the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl LIX. In his two playoff starts last season, Love threw for 466 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions, and nearly shocked the 49ers in the Divisional Round.
