Super Bowl LIX: Best Bets for MVP

To win a Super Bowl is the dream of every football player, and for a few of the very elite, the dream is a Super Bowl MVP. To win this award, given to the player that shines the brightest on the sport’s biggest stage, is career-defining. It also can pave the way to Hall of Fame enshrinement in Canton, Ohio.

Tom Brady isn’t the GOAT because he completed passes in the regular season for more than 50 miles of yardage. He is the GOAT because he has five Super Bowl MVPs. And Brady’s Super Bowl nemesis, Eli Manning, is not Hall of Fame worthy because he went to four Pro Bowls. But he is one of six players to win multiple Super Bowl MVP awards, and that alone gives him a case.

Super Bowl MVP Odds

Patrick Mahomes (+120)

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the six multiple MVP winners, with three MVP awards in his three Super Bowl wins. One more MVP, and he passes Joe Montana into second place all-time, just one behind Brady.

His short odds are an indication that if the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIX, it will more than likely be because of Mahomes.

Saquon Barkley (+260)

A year ago, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was finishing up another disappointing season with the New York Giants. He failed to break 1,000 yards, and the team finished 6-11.

Now Barkley is a 2,000-yard rusher playing in the Super Bowl, and if the Eagles are to win that Super Bowl, oddsmakers believe that it will largely be because of him. What a difference a year makes – that and running behind a great offensive line on one of the most talented offenses in football.

Jalen Hurts (+350)

This is still a quarterback’s league, and the starting QB has won 33 Super Bowl MVP awards and 11 of the last 15. So it would not be a surprise if Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is your game MVP. Especially when you consider just how great he played in the Super Bowl two years ago, when he had 374 total yards and four touchdowns.

Travis Kelce (+1500)

There is a big odds drop-off after the big three of Mahomes, Barkley, and Hurts, but not a drop-off in skill. Travis Kelce is a little long in the football tooth at 35-years-old, but he remains a killer in the postseason.

He has a record nine career postseason games of at least 100 yards, including this year in the Divisional Round, and with three catches on Sunday, he will pass Jerry Rice for the most career receptions in the Super Bowl. He already leads Rice in career postseason catches, and he is just two touchdowns behind Rice for most career postseason touchdowns.

Xavier Worthy (+2800)

No rookie has ever won Super Bowl MVP. Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams won the award in his first season as a starter, but he was not officially a rookie. So if wide receiver Xavier Worthy wins it this Sunday, he would be the first.

Worthy has become more a part of the Kansas City offense as the season has gone on, and in the AFC Championship Game, he finished with 101 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. When Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp won the Super Bowl MVP three seasons ago, he had 99 total yards and two touchdowns.

A.J. Brown (+3500)

Another wide receiver to keep an eye on is Eagle A.J. Brown, the best receiver playing on Sunday, and perhaps the most well-read. Even missing four games this season, Brown broke 1,000 yards receiving for the fifth time in his career. He only had one big game in the Eagles three playoff wins this year, but two years ago in the Super Bowl, he finished with 96 yards and a touchdown.

Kareem Hunt (+6000)

Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt has scored touchdowns in four straight games, and if he is able to find the end zone multiple times on Sunday, he might garner some votes.

Chris Jones (+6000)

In the playoffs Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has never put up the kind of numbers required to win an MVP award. But his value to the Chiefs in the double-teams he commands can’t be overstated. And if anyone is capable of changing the game from the defensive line, it is the three-time, first-team All-Pro.

DeVonta Smith (+6500)

Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is hoping to become just the fourth player in NFL history to win the Heisman Trophy, a college football national championship, and a Super Bowl ring. If he can also win a Super Bowl MVP, he would join Marcus Allen as the only two men to win all four.
