For the second time in franchise history, the Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions, and for the second time, they emerge from the Super Bowl as dynasty killers.
The year after the New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, their second Super Bowl win in three seasons, they lost to the Eagles, 41-33. New England won the next year over the Los Angeles Rams, with the loss to the Eagles the only thing that prevented the Patriots from winning three straight.
On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs took their shot at winning a third straight Super Bowl, and once again it was the Eagles who stopped their quest for history. The Eagles front four on defense suffocated Patrick Mahomes from the start, sacking him six times and leaving the Kansas City offense stuck in neutral for the entire first half.
By the time the Chiefs got going in the second half, the game was over. The Eagles won Super Bowl LIX, 40-22.
Super Bowl LX Odds
Philadelphia Eagles (+600)
Following the Chiefs as repeat champions, the Eagles are the favorites to repeat next year when the Super Bowl is played in Santa Clara, California. Saquon Barkley is unlikely to rush for another 2,000 yards in 2025 (it’s never been done twice by the same player). But the defense is young and they should be just as good in 2025. And quarterback Jalen Hurts is now a Super Bowl MVP.
Kansas City Chiefs (+700)
In the seven seasons that Patrick Mahomes has been an NFL starter, he has never not played in at least the AFC Championship Game. He’s hosted it six times. The Chiefs were blown out in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers four years ago, and with a retooled offensive line, they were right back in the mix the very next season, and have won two Super Bowls since.
As long as Mahomes and Andy Reid are together, they will be among the favorites.
Buffalo Bills (+700)
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is now the defending league MVP, and there is every reason to believe that the Bills dominance of the AFC East will continue, making them a top contender in the AFC.
They face questions about aging veterans like Amari Cooper and Von Miller. But this team will once again be one of the best in the NFL.
Baltimore Ravens (+700)
Closing out the Big Three in the AFC are the Baltimore Ravens. Like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson has his personal hardware, but is still missing a trip to the Super Bowl.
Running back Derrick Henry was outstanding in 2024, but he’s also 31. The left side of the offensive line enters free agency, and the Ravens need more depth at cornerback. But with Jackson and Henry, and head coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore is the favorite in the AFC North.
Detroit Lions (+1000)
The sudden departure from the postseason by the Detroit Lions was one of the biggest surprises of the playoffs. From media darlings to sentimental favorites, to actual favorites to win the NFC, to one-and-done in the playoffs.
There isn’t anything left for the Lions to do but take that next step. But can they do that with both of their coordinators leaving for head coaching jobs in 2025?
San Francisco 49ers (+1600)
The San Francisco 49ers missed the playoffs and finished below .500 in 2024, so if the pattern holds in the Kyle Shanahan-era, they will at least make the NFC Championship Game next season.
Injuries killed their chances in 2024, but 2025 is not as simple as getting healthy. Deebo Samuel is on the trade block, the Niners have 24 unrestricted free agents, and it’s now time to pay quarterback Brock Purdy.
Washington Commanders (+1800)
Purdy will still officially be on his rookie contract in 2025, even with a new deal in place. The Washington Commanders get three more years of rookie control for Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels before they need to pay him, and that means they can be one of the more aggressive teams this offseason.
Maybe trade for Myles Garrett. Sign top free agents at cornerback and linebacker. Add a wide receiver to go alongside Terry McLaurin. Washington has the cap space, a motivated owner, and suddenly they are an attractive team to prospective free agents.
Green Bay Packers (+1800)
A lot of very good teams lost to the Eagles this season, and there is no reason to be down on the Green Bay Packers rise because of their Divisional Round loss at Philadelphia. The only real concern about the Packers going forward is the toughness of their division. If they have to get into the playoffs as a wild card team, not a division winner, the road through the playoffs will be just as tough as this past season.
