Nevada Casinos October Revenue Again Down Year-on-Year

Nevada’s gambling operators, including the giant casino resorts of the Las Vegas Strip, brought in $1.286 billion in October 2024, according to the latest monthly data release from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

While still an impressive figure, it’s down 2.19% from October 2023, and also below September’s $1.312 billion.

However, October 2023 was a record-setting month for the Silver State gambling business. So, barring another record, it was always going to be tough to match.

The Las Vegas Strip once again led the way with $692 million in revenue for the month. But that was down 3.12% compared to October 2023.

Barely any areas in Nevada saw more casino revenue than last year. Only the small towns of Mesquite and South Lake Tahoe near the California borders saw any kind of increased revenues year-on-year.

Numbers Breakdown

Outside of the Las Vegas Strip, Downtown Las Vegas remained in second-place for gambling revenues among Nevada’s districts. It pulled in $692 million for the month, although that was down 11% on October of last year.

On the flipside, October 2023 was downtown’s best-ever month for casino revenues, so comparisons are tough.

The worst part of October for Nevada’s gambling sector was a disastrous sportsbook performance. In something you don’t see very often, parlay bets actually lost Nevada sportsbooks some $320,000 in total. That’s something some operators alluded to in their recent Q3 reports, blaming a series of upset NFL results for the losses.

Football betting revenue in Nevada was down 79% year-on-year compared to last October.

One positive for Las Vegas casinos for the month was that overall slot machine win was up slightly year-on-year. Small margins of luck make a big difference across the scale of Las Vegas gambling, and with less very large slot jackpots happening to hit in October, win was up from 7.51% to 7.55%.

From all this activity, the Silver State collected $79 million tax for October. That was 4% down on October 2023’s final tax bill for casinos.

Looking forward, revenues should have increased in November, as Sin City’s luxury casino resorts pulled in thousands more well-heeled international gamblers visiting town for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Exactly how much that was is unknown yet, but speculation is it may not be as much of a boost as the 2023 race provided.

The numbers for November will be released on January 2. There was a two-day delay in providing October’s revenue report because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
