Canada’s Michael Watson won the Triton High Roller Poker Series Event #3 this week in the European nation of Montenegro.
The Canadian took home a cool $1.023 million from his fourth career Triton Poker tour victory. He can add that to his career earnings of $26.2 million, which got him to fifth place on the list of Canada’s highest-earning poker players.
The $30K buy-in super high roller event at The Maestral Resort & Casino in Budva, Montenegro, attracted 100 initial buy-ins and 54 re-entrants over two days, starting May 14. It had a prize pool of $4.620 million.
In the end, Watson outlasted all other competitors. He took out Malaysian Wai Kiat Lee in the final hand to seal the million- dollar win.
“Every time you come to a Triton stop, you want to come away with a trophy,” Watson said, speaking to the Triton team after the win.
“You want to get a win. It feels really good to get one in hold’em now, which I hadn’t done either. Just want to keep adding.”
The Tournament Action
Lee, searching for his first Triton victory after 23 cashes, hit the final table after having a solid chip lead through both days of the event. However, Watson ground him down from the start of the final table to the end.
The final hand started out with pocket fives for Watson, which became a three of a kind on the flop.
Knowing he didn’t have the chips to go much further, Lee went all-in on his Queen-Six after the flop gave him multiple straight or flush draw possibilities. Unluckily for him, the final card gave him nothing, leaving the three of a kind 5s for Watson’s victory.
The Canadian just turned 40 a couple of weeks ago, and he can now celebrate that with a cool $1 million tournament victory to add to his collection. It also makes him the only person to win a Triton title in pot limit Omaha, no limit hold ‘em, and short deck poker.
“The growth of the Triton tour has been incredible,” Watson said. “Now there’s no chance I can ever skip one. The fields are so big, they’re so good. Jeju was insane and Montenegro has been good as well.”
