An $810 million Mega Millions winning ticket has been sold in Texas. The winning ticket matched all five numbers and the Mega Ball in the Tuesday, September 10 draw.
It was bought at a Murphy USA gas station in the Houston metro city of Sugar Land. The winner has yet to claim their prize, but the Texas Lottery said they have decided to claim the $409 million lump sum prize over the full $810 million in installments.
The winner may remain anonymous under Texas Lottery regulations, should they wish.
The win is the largest Mega Millions prize since the March 26 jackpot win of $1.13 billion in New Jersey, which has yet to be claimed. It’s also the biggest lottery jackpot win in Texas since April’s controversial $95 million win by a New Jersey consortium that bought 25.8 million tickets covering all the number combinations.
“We are beyond thrilled to celebrate Texas’ largest-ever jackpot winner, and can’t wait to meet and congratulate them in person,” said Executive Director of the Texas Lottery Ryan Mindell in a press release.
“If you’re the lucky holder of the winning ticket, be sure to sign it, secure it in a safe place, consult financial and legal advisors, and then contact the Texas Lottery before making your way to Austin to claim the prize.”
The Win
The lucky winning player hit with a Quick Pick random number ticket. The matched numbers were 1-2-16-24-66, and the Mega Ball was 6.
The $800 million prize had been building since June 7, when it started at $20 million. It rolled over 27 times without a jackpot winner before the lucky winner hit all the numbers this week.
It’s the biggest prize handed out in Texas, and the first Mega Millions jackpot win since October 6, 2023, when a player consortium based in San Angelo won a $360 million prize. The Murphy Express store that sold the winning ticket is also in for a $1 million windfall.
“We had one of our closers get a call. We started reading articles online and it was our store. It is the craziest thing,” said Murphy USA District Manager Jonathan Amaya, speaking to Houston Public Media.
“We’re just excited. Hopefully we get to meet the customer that won the winning ticket, and we’re really excited for the community, as well as this location. It’s a big win.”
