A woman from Prince George’s County, Maryland, won $50,000 on a Pick 5 lottery drawing after using numbers she said came to her in a dream.
The woman, who chose to remain unnamed, claimed the prize last week. She picked up the ceremonial check with her husband at the Maryland Lottery’s headquarters in Baltimore.
The winning ticket was actually bought on December 20, making the win a nice festive present for the couple. They also won $5,000 on a separate ticket using the same numbers.
The woman told lottery officials that the number combination 99000 came to her in a dream the previous week. She said she and her husband almost forgot to buy the ticket, but the numbers popped into her head again while driving to a Christmas party.
“We were running late and I almost forgot to play. But I knew we just had to play those numbers from my dream,” she said, speaking to the Maryland Lottery.
The Purchase
The woman, from Oxon Hill, Maryland, said she was an occasional Pick 5 player. But when she dreamt of the numbers 99000, she felt it was her sign to buy a ticket.
The woman said she and her husband were on the way to a family Christmas party when the numbers once more popped vividly into her head. They were already late for the party, but decided to stop off at the Zip Mart store in Oxon Hill to specifically play the wife’s numbers on the lottery.
They put $1 on the straight bet, meaning they had to see all five numbers drawn in order if they were to win. They also put 50 cents on a boxed bet with the same numbers, meaning they would win if they came up in any order.
The couple then went to their Christmas party and forgot about the tickets until they got home.
The Win
After checking the results and seeing the numbers come up with the $55,000 win, it took a while to sink in. Especially with the manner in which the woman says she predicted it.
“My wife showed me, but it didn’t seem real,” said the husband. “But when the Midas touch comes, hopefully, you’re on it, and thankfully we were.”
The couple, who are grandparents, said they were planning to spend some of the money on their relatives. Otherwise, they told lottery officials, they weren’t sure what they would spend the money on.
“Whatever she wants,” the husband said. “But we already gave the grandkids something extra for Christmas.”
This win is not the only recent example of someone in Maryland choosing coincidental numbers and winning a Pick 5 jackpot with them. On New Year’s Eve 2024, a man from Anne Arundel County used the license plate number of a driver that cut him off on the highway as his pick. He won $50,000.
