Earlier this year, a California robbery team allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of items from various high-profile locations on the Las Vegas Strip. This month, one of them has been arrested, while the other is on the lam, with several warrants out for his arrest.
Viviana Hernandez and Leonardo Munoz are charged with dozens of counts of felony theft over the incidents in early February.
Items stolen included broadcast equipment, jewelery, watches, cash, and assorted camera equipment. Aria Resort & Casino, a broadcast team from DraftKings staying at Mandalay Bay, and singer Jason Derulo’s backstage dressing room at performance venue Area15 were among the targets.
Police say that the total value of the stolen items amounted to more than $350,000. Las Vegas was especially busy at the time, as the thefts all occurred days before Super Bowl LVIII rolled into town.
The Alleged Thefts
On February 9, 2024, an employee of online gambling operator DraftKings reported the theft of more than $10,000 in professional camera equipment taken from the Mandalay Bay casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The missing items were part of a stage area that was being set up for a sports broadcast.
Later that day, Aria Resort & Casino reported a similar theft of high-end video equipment. One of the bags contained an Apple AirTag, which police used to track down its location.
In between the Aria theft being reported and police following up on the tracking tag lead, chart-topping singer Jason Derulo reported the disappearance of some $300,000 worth of jewelery, watches, designer clothes, and cash from his dressing room at the Area15 entertainment venue, just off the Las Vegas Strip.
The Arrest
Police say the AirTag in the bag stolen from Aria Resort was found in a room at an unnamed casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Investigators connected this room to Hernandez and Munoz.
The pair were not at the room when it was searched. As well as the camera equipment from Aria, police found other stolen goods, including pieces linked to the Area15 theft. Police also recovered some other stolen items from the spree in a separate traffic stop in Las Vegas later in 2024.
Hernandez was arrested earlier in October, according to local media reports. She was charged with various counts of theft. She posted bail and is due back in Clark County court in November.
Munoz remains at large, with several warrants out for his arrest. Las Vegas police are also reportedly seeking several other individuals in relation to the thefts.
