A Clark County teaching assistant has this week been charged by police with having an inappropriate relationship with a student at Eldorado High School (pictured) in East Las Vegas.
Jerusalem Roman Garcia, 20, was arrested on August 23, according to a police report issued this week. In early September, she was charged with contacting a minor for sex.
The police report says Garcia admitted the relationship when questioned by officers. She told them the pair had been on a dozen dates, including several at Las Vegas casino Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall.
She says the pair did not have sex, but would cuddle and kiss, sometimes in bed with each other. The student’s age was not revealed, but police reports said he used his car to pick up Garcia on several occasions – suggesting he is at least 16.
The Alleged Relationship
School officials and the police began investigating the relationship between Garcia and the student after an anonymous tip. The student later said they learned of the relationship from speaking to Garcia’s younger sister, according to local media.
Both parties admitted to the relationship when questioned, police said. Reports said that the pair met at a party on May 26 this year, where they exchanged social media contacts. They began messaging online and going on dates shortly afterwards.
The pair went on a dozen dates over the following three months, including two visits to Sam’s Town on the Boulder Highway in southeast Las Vegas. It is unclear if they checked into the casino’s hotel together, or simply hung out at the property. They also visited Galleria Mall in Henderson on several occasions, and took scenic drives around the city.
Garcia told police they did not have sex, although she wanted to, because of the student’s age and fear of losing her job. Police also accessed Instagram messages between the pair where Garcia told the student she loved him and would never leave him.
The Consequences
Garcia was booked at Clark County Detention Center earlier in September. She posted bail and is due for her first appearance in court on September 30. She was also placed on leave by the school district after the investigation began in late August.
Documents state that Garcia told police it was a consensual and loving relationship and she would like to continue it despite her arrest. The charges are a category B felony under Nevada law, and if convicted, Garcia could face up to 10 years in prison.
