Las Vegas FBI Office Head Fired in President Trump Shake-Up

Reports emerged late last week that the top agent at the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Las Vegas field office (pictured) has been asked to resign by officials in the new administration of President Donald Trump.

Special Agent Spencer Evans, who has led the FBI’s Las Vegas operations since 2022, was reportedly told not to report for work Monday, February 3.

The departure comes in the wake of a high level shakeup at the bureau by the new administration of President Trump. That has included dozens of departures, including executive directors and heads of field offices in Miami and Las Vegas.

Trump’s pick to be the next FBI Director, Las Vegas-based Kash Patel, previously said he would not weaponize his role to chase people who investigated Trump in the past. But some see this FBI purge as doing exactly that.

“I was informed by FBIHQ today that the executive leadership at the Department of Justice plans to dismiss me from the roles of the FBI, along with several other FBI executives, as soon as Monday Morning,” Evans said in a note obtained by NBC.

“I was given no rationale for this decision, which, as you might imagine, has come as a shock.”

Shock Departure

When we wrote about Donald Trump’s potential impact on the gambling business, his administration firing the top FBI investigator involved in the recent Resorts World Las Vegas money laundering scandal was not particularly on anyone’s radar.

Although the exact details of much of what the FBI works on is unclear, Evans would have been undoubtedly involved in the recent federal investigations into illegal California bookmakers and their links to Las Vegas casinos

While gaming regulator the Nevada Gaming Control Board was seen as slow to react to events, the FBI’s Las Vegas office played a key role in the large and sweeping operation, which began almost two years ago.

There was also a large FBI presence involved in the Department of Justice’s 2024 case against Wynn Resorts. That resulted in a record $130 million settlement from the Las Vegas-based operator.

With all of President’s Trump’s friends in the Nevada gambling scene, it’s interesting that Evans would be caught-up. The Las Vegas FBI head hadn’t had any public interaction with the President, beyond being involved in the investigation into the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside Trump Las Vegas Hotel on New Year’s Day.

It is not known who is set to replace Evans at the FBI’s Las Vegas office, although presumably it will be someone more amenable to the new administration’s views.
