On Monday night, the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets played for first place in the AFC East. The Bills won, 23-20, moving them two games in front of New York in the standings.
On Tuesday, the Jets finalized a trade for Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams, bolstering an offense that was two missed field goals away from upsetting Buffalo. A few hours later, the Bills countered that move by making one of their own. Joining Buffalo via trade is wide receiver Amari Cooper, coming over from the Cleveland Browns.
Adams Reunites with Aaron Rodgers
Adams doesn’t solve everything that ails the Jets. They continue to struggle running the football, ranking just 30th in the NFL in rushing yards per game. He also doesn’t solve the kicker problem, as witnessed by Greg Zuerlein’s two missed field goals on Monday night from 32 and 43 yards.
But on the Jets final offensive play, which was a Bills interception to end the game, Aaron Rodgers said that wide receiver Mike Williams ran the wrong route. One would expect that Adams can solve that problem. Adams and Rodgers played in Green Bay together for eight seasons, and in five of those seasons, Adams was a Pro Bowler. The two combined for 76 touchdowns during their time as Packers teammates.
Adams had been vocal about his desire to leave the Las Vegas Raiders, a team he handpicked in 2022. But that was when his college quarterback, Derek Carr, was still in Vegas. SInce Carr was released at the end of that season, Adams has been unhappy. Now he is out of Las Vegas, back with Rodgers, and hoping to turn things around for a Jets team that entered the season with high expectations.
When the season began, the Jets were -175 to make the playoffs and +1850 to win the Super Bowl. Those odds have grown because of New York’s 2-4 start to the season. But the Adams trade was noticed by bookmakers. Prior to the trade being finalized, the Jets were paying +3400 to win the Super Bowl. With Adams in the fold, New York is now on the board at +3000.
The Jets play at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, and New York is favored by 1.5 points.
Josh Allen Gets a Weapon
The wide receiver cupboard has been particularly bare for Josh Allen and the Bills this season, with not a single player on the team having more than 250 yards receiving. Only four players — tight end Dalton Kincaid, running back James Cook, and wide receivers Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman — have as many as 100 yards catching the ball.
Coming to Buffalo is Cooper, who this season has 250 yards with one of the worst offenses and quarterbacks in the league. Cooper has six career 1,000-yard seasons, and last year, with the revolving door that was Cleveland Browns quarterbacks, he finished with 1,250 yards. He instantly becomes the best and most experienced wide receiver on the Bills.
Buffalo began the season at +1650 to win the Super Bowl, and now, in first place and as the only team in the AFC East over .500, the Bills are paying +1200 to win the Super Bowl. That ties them for third in the AFC with the Houston Texans, and behind the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.
Buffalo hosts the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and the Bills are favored by nine points.
