Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek to Meet in French Open Semifinals

No. 1 seed Iga Świątek is the best women’s tennis player in the world. No. 3 seed Coco Gauff is the best women’s tennis player in the United States, and the third-best player in the world. The two women who decided the French Open championship in 2022 – won by Świątek – will meet again, this time in the semifinals on Thursday, June 6.

Both ladies won their matches on Tuesday to set up the rematch. Gauff needed a come-from-behind, three-set win to get past Tunisian Ons Jabeur, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, reaching at least the semifinals at her third straight Grand Slam tournament. Świątek cruised to her victory, 6-0, 6-2 over the defending champion at Wimbledon, Markéta Vondroušová.

Świątek has now won 19 straight matches at the French Open, and she’s just two more wins away from a third straight French Open title, and fourth in five years. Prior to her 6-0, 6-2 win over Vondroušová, her win in the fourth round was 6-0, 6-0 over Anastasia Potapova.

“It’s good to just keep going and not think about this match as something huge – just another match – to not put too much baggage on your shoulders,” Świątek said. “But I guess Coco is not easy. She really likes playing on clay, especially here. I’ll just focus on myself and I’ll prepare tactically and we’ll see.”

Gauff does indeed like playing on clay, but Świątek is easily the best clay player in the world. She’s also been dominant against Gauff for her career. The two have played each other 11 times, and 10 times Świątek was the victor. Most recently,, she beat Gauff 6-4, 6-3 on clay last month at the Italian Open, on her way to the title.

Gauff Big Betting Underdog

Gauff is the current U.S. Open champion. She was a semifinalist this year at the Australian Open, and she was a finalist at Roland Garros in 2022. But at +550, she’s a longshot to get past Świątek.

A bet on the best tennis player to ever come out of Poland pays just -800. She’s now at -215 to win the title, with Aryna Sabalenka at +400 and Elena Rybakina at +650. Both of them are favored to win their quarterfinal matches on Wednesday.

Gauff is the longshot of the four at +1200, although those odds will shorten considerably if she can get past Świątek. Gauff’s one win over Świątek came on the hard court at the Cincinnati Open in 2023.

Gauff said after that win, “It feels really good. It shows that I can be at that level, or compete at that level, at least. I’m sure I’m going to face her many more times. I still think that I’m not even to the peak of my game.”

Along with being an underdog to win the match, the total games won prop line shows the lopsided nature of the match. The over/under on total wins for Świątek is 12.5, with the under paying -205. Twelve wins would be a straight sets victory.

The over/under on Gauff’s wins in the match is 6.5.
